i found out that slaves went north for freedom at night so they wouldn't get caught and returned
the slaves don't have any compasses so they had to look to the stars and find the big dipper that points to the north star
to drink and get water they had to use drinking gourds that held water so they didn't get dehydrated
when the slaves escaped they had to travel in small groups or they would get cought
the slaves had no way to tel where north was or freedom or how to get there because the slave owners did not let them learn where north was because they were afraid they would escape

this book was a very good book i loved the part where she dreamed about helping slaves that escaped and is actually happend

this book is a really good historical fiction book where Lucinda helps her mom with the cat, a deer, and a hurt chicken that they saved from hunters the historical part of this book is the slavery where lucinda healped slaves that didn't get payed and that wanted freedom
